Finish Only the Hits: A Finishing Budget for Posters and Premieres

Finishing steps feel productive. The upscale is bigger, the premium render is richer, the numbers on the job receipt are satisfyingly serious. That feeling is exactly the trap: finishing multiplies the value of a piece, and multiplying a piece nobody wanted still gives you roughly zero, at 61 or 101 credits a time.

Proof first, polish second

The rule is to let the cheap formats vote. Publish the still at standard size; watch what your audience actually does — saves, clicks through the link, buys the set it previews. A frame that pulls at working size has earned its final cut: upscale it for the storefront, render its premium version for the poster. A frame that sank gets no finishing at all. Its replacement is already cheaper than its rescue.

The arithmetic that keeps you honest

At standard prices, one image upscale costs the same as ten fresh standard frames. One video upscale costs about seventeen. Every finishing job should have to answer a rude question: is this piece worth ten new chances at a hit? Sometimes the answer is obviously yes — the poster of a selling pack, the trailer anchoring a premium tier. Most of the time, for most frames, the honest answer is no, and the credits go back into production where the next hit is hiding.

Where finishing genuinely pays

  • Posters and covers — the largest-displayed frames on the page and in the store.
  • Spec gates — marketplaces with minimum dimensions your working files cannot pass.
  • Breakouts — the trailer that outperformed the catalogue earns its HD master.
  • Print — physical products punish small files without mercy.

Everything else ships at working size, proudly. A leading page is not the one with the biggest files; it is the one where every expensive step can point at the proof that paid for it.
